The Most Up To Date Product Management Course
I created a course, aligned to ICAgile Learning Outcomes (created by Jeff Patton and others) for people who want to move into Product Management and early career product managers.
I created a course!
The most up to date Product Management course aligned to ICAgile Learning Outcomes (created by Jeff Patton and others). Come one, come all.
If you want to attend, I have an sneaky discount for you, send me an email at irene@phronesisadvisory.com
What's this course about and why should you care?
2 Days of the most up to date Product thinking in Product Management
Certified by ICAgile - Yes, there's a badge you can proudly share for all your hard work
It's face to face or virtual - you choose
You get a detailed folder with everything!!! that you can refer back to
Plus a list of the best product thought leaders and their books, like Marty Cagan, Teresa Torres, Rich Mironov, Radhika Dutt, Melissa Perri and more (let me see if I can get you a signed copy too......)
over 30 activities and discussions over 2 days (more value then reading a book or passively watching a video on how to "do product management")
So how does the course work?
I start with Product thinking - what's the problem to be solved, first principles, what outcome do I want to achieve for the company and customer.
I introduce the Venn Diagram (don't we love a good Venn?) and how to minimise the risk of a product not being desirable, viable, feasible, usable, valuable.
I talk about the difference between Product and Project management.
It has all the great Product Thinkers. Wisdom from the speakers you've heard on 💡Product Circle⭕ Chat.
Plus, I get to show you, hands on, how to create a Product Vision, Roadmap, think through a Business Model Canvas, how to use the Empathy Map, what a Customer Journey should look like and more.
The focus is on outcome oriented and creating impact in your role as a Product Manager.
You won't find me talking about how to be a great Product Owner - stand ups, backlog management, retros, grooming etc. This is not what this course is about.
This course has 7 sessions over 2 days and covers:
Session 1: What is Product and Product Management?
Where we get our definitions right
Explain the difference between Product and Project Management
Talk about how to shift from a Project to Product Approach (and the benefits)
Session 2: The Role of the Product Manager in the Product Lifecycle
I talk about the product role across the product lifecycle
introduce the role of product in managing risks and creating value
explain the technology adoption curve and how to cross the chasm from early adopter to early majority (so many deaths happen here)
Session 3: Gathering Evidence
In this session we roll up our sleeves. I take you through ~10 ways to gather evidence then force you to choose which is most appropriate to what you need to understand. From customer, competitor, market, macro, internal and more. You want to know where the gap is and whether you can win in that space or how to tackle the opportunity, right? But we're time poor and need to make strategic decisions on what can get us there faster.
I explain product market fit and how to get there as well as
How to identify product ideas and opportunities
I talk about how product management isn't always perfect and every organisation does some things slightly differently. So let's focus on how we can get to the outcome we need (creating value for the organisation and solving problems for the customer). We go deep here.
Session 4: Product Strategy
Now that you've gathered evidence, in this session we talk Strategy and Storytelling.
Starting with how to do it in an established organisation with alignment to Company Vision/Mission and navigating internal partners and stakeholders
We unpack what makes a Product Vision compelling and talk story telling, vivid descriptions and the 10 principles of crafting a product vision. Then we practice - we roll up our sleeves and practice creating a Product Vision.
Now that you have vision - time to Share (I show you how) and measure.
I give you the highlights of a good metric - hint we're going for Impact and Outcome (none of those vanity metrics that look good on paper but don't solve your problem - or lead to $$$). I take you through at least 3 frameworks for product metrics that you can take back and use in your day to day work. Plus we roll up our sleeves and practice them
I explain how to know your product, know your customer, communicate assumptions and get alignment on the customer
We go deep in this session practicing how to use an empathy map, customer journey map and more.
Session 5: Product Planning
Now it's time to understand how to manage ideas (because, let's face it everyone and their dog, hairdresser, gardener, mum has a GREAT idea for your product, right?)
I help you prioritise these ideas against what's going to get you closer to the outcome (vision/strategy) you want to achieve. We roll up our sleeves and practice filtering ideas, prioritising and mapping with the view to derisk desirability, viability and feasibility.
Then I take you through how to create an outcome oriented roadmap. None of these dates/times/feature driven factory models. We're talking IMPACT!!! I promise your engineers will love you for it. Your sales teams will be able to explain the value (over the feature) and you'll get to the Outcome you want faster. We go through user story mapping, now-next-later roadmaps (I tried to squeeze in Roman's GO Roadmap but I only had two days). But I snuck it in the appendix (which honestly, has 20+ additional tools and frameworks you could use in your product practice. If they make sense - not every tool will get you there, specific to the problem you need to solve, but there is a group of tools for a specific purpose that work)
Session 6: Defining a Relevant Product
I go deep into how to define a relevant product borrowing from Don Norman and Design Thinking, rapid build measure learn loops and my personal favourite the UK originated Double Diamond. I explain hypotheses and experiments and how to design one. I talk through the many experiment types you can choose to test your hypothesis (there are literally hundreds). We roll up our sleeves and design a hypothesis and experiment together
I take you through how to learn quickly and iterate fast with feedback. Designing feedback loops are crucial to improve the product.
Plus I show you how to provide a response to whoever, internal or external, raised the feedback.
Session 7: Working with Product Teams
Here's where we go deep on the different types of product teams, how to structure a product team for impact, how to sustainably scale a product team as well as the difference between the PM and PO role and titles.
We map this back to what roles you need in your product team based on where your product is at in the Product Lifecycle and
discuss how to scale your product team for Value
